One in five older people living in the community and two in five people living in care homes experience depression or poor mental health. Research shows that there are five key issues that can have an impact on the mental wellbeing of older people:
- Participation in meaningful activities
- Physical health
Even though there are laws in place to help with some of these issues – for instance, the Equality Act 2010 addresses age discrimination– you may feel that you can’t influence society-wide problems like pensioner poverty.
